It is obvious that teachings of Risale-i Nur are spreading widely all over the world. The realistic (Imanic) approach of Risale-i Nur could eliminate the secular thoughts and protect the Muslims from its effect.  Success of Risale-i Nur was due to sacrifice and dedications of eminent personalities who took back the ‎community in the position and gave the spiritual support. ‎They are the models of this community. They are the ones who took the community to a highest position and glory.

Imam Ahmed Husrev was a model and key person of the Risale-i Nur movement. He devoted his whole life in the path of Quranic service, although he related to a rich family and possessed enough wealth and property. He became a prominent character who really deserved the poem written by Imam Shafi: “There are Allah’s servants who are very clever. They left the

world fearing temptation (Fitna). They looked at the world and realized that it is not the true place to live in. They saw this world as a deep sea and made good deeds as the boat which would take them to the land”. (Samarkendi:2000:243)

When Imam Ahmed Husrev has taken the Risale-i Nur as‏ ‏his mission of life despite the fact that the Ottoman ‎empire was overthrown and Khilafat was vanished. The ban on Arabic alphabets in 1923 led to recite the holy Quran in Turkish and the Azan (Call for Prayers) was called ‎in Turkish.‎ In addition to that, Islamic traditional dress code were restricted,‎ Islamic schools (Madrasas) were closed. Subjects regarding religion were cancelled. The majority of Islamic scholars who

Were serving the nation and community for years was expelled or prisoned or hanged to death. Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi himself was also expelled and prisoned. Imam Ahmed Husrev worked as assistant to Imam Bediuzzaman Nursi during the hard times by showing his ‎sincerity, obedience, dedication and loyalty to Islam.

Without Imam Ahmed Husrev it is impossible to understand the history of Risale-i Nur. Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi described Imam Ahmed Husrev by the following words: it can be seen in my opinion that, physically we are two but spiritually our souls are together. (Kastamonu Letters: 2013:164) Therefore, it depicted that Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi cannot be understood without properly understanding Imam Ahmed Husrev. ‎This article aims to analyse Imam Ahmed Husrev’s life and his position in the Risale-i Nur movement. The resources cited for this paper are mostly depends on the Hayrat Vakfı Publications, especially focuses on ‎ “Bediuzzaman Said Nursi ve Hayrul Halefi Ahmed Husrev Altınbaşak” which was prepared by the Hayrat Vakfi Academical Research Committee and from the Collections of Risale-i Nur.

  1. Birth, Family and Lineage

Ahmed Husrev was born in 1899 in Sparta known as the city of rose which is situated in western part of Turkey. He related to a religious and respected family. Ahmed Husrev was the grandson of Haji Edhemoghlu Ali Ağa who was one of the governors of Sparta under Ottoman Empire. Mehmed Efendi is his father, and Ayshe Hanım is his mother. (Erşen:2014: 265) Ahmed Husrev was from a respectable family known as Green Turbans by his father’s side which traced back to Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H)’s companion Abu Bakkar (R.A). His mother’s side is known as Kurra Hafiz also traced back to Prophet Muhammed (P.B.U.H) through his grandson Hussain (R.A). Thus, it can be clearly stated that he belongs to Ahlul Bayth‎. He lost his father when he was young, then he was raised up under the guidance of his mother.‎ His mother Ayshe Hanım grew up under a well reputed religious family.‎ Notably, his grandfather Hafiz Osman Efendi used to write the copies of the Holy Qur’an by his own hand, while his ‎grandmother used to assist him by inserting Harakath (-َ /–ُ/ -ِ) of the Quran. His uncle and aunt were Calligraphers (Hattats). (Salih:2008:38-39)

His mother was quite unlike most others, she stood always besides him consolidating his dawah activities. She was one of the best readers of Risale-i Nur. By utilizing and practicing it in her life, therefore, she was ‎respected and considered as one of the best students of Risale-i Nur.‎ In a letter which was written by Imam Ahmed Husrev to Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi he mentioned that how his mother was attracted to Risale-i Nur when he was reading the sixth letter of the Risale-i Nur: “When I was reading the sixth letter, my mother was crying with tears falling down from her eyes by the impact of it.” (Barla Letters :2013:62) Because of this she was placed in the heart of Imam Bediüzzaman  Nursi.

Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi mentioned the status of Imam Ahmed Husrev’s mother by the following words‎: “Husrev! You always write and your mother always pray for me with full of affection. Already the blessed lady has won importance in my heart. Because she was the one who taught you and trained you, the good training of her sent you to me. I feel grateful to your mother when you make me happy. Since she is your mother, she loves me like her own child and makes dua for me. I decided to put her in my mother status and so that my spiritual gain will be her gain and my duas will also be with her.” (Committee:2014:682) From this, we can see that she was a pious woman, as

an Arab poet said: “Mother is an Institution. If you could produce one noble mother you could produce a whole noble nation”. (Hashimi:1969:250)

As Imam Ahmed Husrev grew up through a religious environment from his childhood, he was pious and devoted to Islam. He started performing five times obligational prayers with Jama’ath when he was five years old. Later on, ‎he attached himself with Zikir gatherings (Zikr Majlis) where his dedication and understanding was praised. Even if ‎he was not attending the gatherings his place where he used to sit remained empty. His glimpse of prospects appeared since childhood until he became a well-known Islamic scholar. As evidence, his mother called him “My sheikh”. (Committee:2014:411) Moreover, Kamil Efendi from Senirkent visited Imam Ahmed Husrev’s family at the time when he was born and carried him by his blessed hands and prayed for him, also ‎gave his family  good tidings and offering them a poem which contains a verse like this: “let the people of ‎the world love you and you love them” (Committee: 2014:408). Afterwards his poem became highly valued. ‎The people around Imam Ahmed Husrev loved him and respected him very much because of his kindness and loyalty. When someone was in need, he would be the first one to attend them and he was called “Hızır” for this noble quality that he adopted. (Committee: 2014:411)

Before his acquaintance with İmam Bediüzzaman Nursi, he was a follower of the teachings of “Tasavvuf”. He was living a life which was filled with Zuhd and Takwa and for this reason he was respected by the other followers of Tasavvuf (Murids). He was away from all of the movements which were against Islam and also, he was away from the cultural modernizations which became popular in the beginning of 20th century.  His friends avoided talking unnecessary matters in front of him.

The time Ahmed Husrev was attending high school, World War I took place‎ and everyone was called upon by the Ottoman government to fulfil their responsibility for the nation. Therefore, in his age of 17 in 1916, after completing ‎his high school, he entered military service. In 1920 he was arrested and was taken under custody for three years in Greece. In this period, he was able to learn French. After that in 1923 he started working in various sectors inside the government until 1926. When he met Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi in 1926 he left everything behind and joined him and invested his future in the path of Risale-i Nur.

Meeting Of Imam Ahmed Husrev with Imam Bediuzzaman Nursi and His Involvement in Risale-I Nur:

In 1926 Imam Ahmed Husrev met Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi when he was exiled to Barla which is a village situated in Sparta. From that moment onwards Imam Ahmed Husrev left his civil service totally and joined Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi. His meeting with Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi was related with his two dreams.  He saw the first and when he was young, and he saw the other dream in the period When he was close to Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi after his arrival to Barla village. He explained the dream that he saw when he was young to a Sheikh by quoting the following words: There is a tree in the middle of the sea. The sea suddenly dries up and the tree dries up as well. At that moment a man came and began who to chop off the branches of the tree. Then there was an open way through the dried sea. Imam Ahmed Husrev starts walking on that way. The Sheikh who listens to this dream explained it like this: “That Sea in your dream is Shariah, the tree and the branches are Tariqas which are inspired from the Shariah. There will be a personality who will come to Sparta to serve Islam. After serving me you will serve him.”(Salih:2008:42)

After these sequence of events, Imam Ahmed Husrev waited for the personality who will arrive to Isparta, and wish to ‎serve him as his Sheikh predicted. At the time of the arrival of Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi, Imam Ahmed Husrev saw two dreams for two following days. The dream says he was appointed as a writer and was started working in a Rose Oil factory which has started its foundation works recently. After two months of this dream, he became the chief writer of a spiritual factory which spreads Rose fragrance from the Qur’an to the whole universe. Imam Ahmed Husrev describes this incident through the following words: “it has just been a year since I saw two dreams continuously for two days which were faithful where I was appointed as a writer and was started working in a Rose Oil factory which has started its foundation works recently. After two months of this dream, I started working as a writer of Risale-i Nur.” (Barla Letters:2013:64)

When Imam Ahmed Husrev was continuing writing Risale-i Nur, he mentioned his dream to Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi and Imam Nursi explained this dream in the following way: “The dream which you saw two months before starting the ‘Words’ is pleasant and true. Yes, my brother, This Jama’at (group) is surrounded by an eternal garden which is from the heavens of Qur’an, in the name of the lovely life of prophet Muhammed (pbuh) , like a factory which produces eternal and delightful truths and full of truthful Quranic commentaries, also having members like you with enormous skills in writing within a blessed Jama’at (group) , we wish you with glad tidings that we appointed you as a special and high ranked writer.”(Committee: 2014:420) By this description of Imam Ahmed Husrev by Imam Bediüzzaman  Nursi shows us that Imam Ahmed Husrev had a very big position and was a greatly recognized by Imam Nursi himself and by the students of Risale-i Nur. Through the Kastamonu Letters it confirms this statement said by Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi: “Brother Husrev! Certainly, I wish to confirm that you have been appointed as the writer of the eternal rose factory.”(Kastamonu Letters:2013:41)

From the above-mentioned narrative regarding the dreams of Imam Ahmed Husrev, it could be seen that,‎ he has been created and assigned by Allah only to serve Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi and the Quranic service which helps people in saving their belief and their hereafter life. According to a Hadith which was narrated by Abu Huraira as he heard the Messenger of God (pbuh) says: “There is nothing left of prophecy but the good tidings.” The companions asked him: What are the glad tidings? He said: “The truthful dreams.”(Buhari:H1433:3039) The Hadith emphasizes that ‎Imam Ahmed Husrev has been guided by “the truthful dreams.” According to another Hadith “Everyone is facilitated in that for which he has been created.”(Muslim:H1431:2649) Imam Bediuzzaman Nursi’s following words clearly stated that Imam Ahmed Husrev has been created to be the writer of Risale-i Nur: “Your pen is ordered to serve the Quran.” (Committee:2014:427)

Imam Ahmed Husrev was searching his guider desperately all day long; when he received the message of the ‎arrival of Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi to Barla village, he walked approximately 40 kilometres to meet him. When he reached Barla he visited Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi in his modest residence which has a magnificent plane-tree in front of it. After the visit of Imam Ahmed Husrev, Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi found his devoted, dedicated, committed student and trust worthiest friend who he has been ‎searching in Sparta for around five years. ‎ After his first visit to his Ustaz, he came back to Sparta and resigned from all the works that he was responsible for and devoted his whole life serving in the path of Quran and Iman. Later, ‎he became as “Two bodies but one soul” with Imam Bediüzzaman Said Nursi. Imam Ahmed Husrev states ‎his happiness through the following words: “O my dear Ustaz! O my valuable teacher! O my respected Murshid whom I was searching for years! O my glorious guider of the Qur’an!” With this love andmotivation, he served the Qur’an by spreading Risale-i Nur for almost 41 years by just only sleeping one hour of a day and serving for the remaining 23 hours.

Imam Ahmed Husrev in The Sight of Imam Bediüzzaman Said Nursi

Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi was thankful to Allah (swt) for having students like Imam Ahmed Husrev and to the people who assisted him in meeting Ahmed Husrev. He emphasized ‎that he was searching for Husrev by indicating as‎: “My brother Husrev! Last year when Bekir Ağa mentioned you, it came suddenly to my heart that I was expecting Hulusi for 5 years, so that he can protect the Words. Alhamdulillah that imagination became as a truth.”(Committee: 2014:423) Also, we mentioned that he thanked Ahmed Husrev’s mother for training him and sending him to Imam Bediüzzaman  Nursi. He also thanked to Bekir Ağa who was the connector between Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi and Ahmed Husrev by the following words: “Bekir Ağa! I will never forget you until my death because you brought to me Husrev and Re’fet. You served immensely for the Quran by bringing them to me. May Allah bless you.” (Committee:2014:423)

Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi considered Imam ‎Ahmed Husrev as a spiritual leader who would serve Turkey. Imam Ahmed Husrev was an intermediary in saving the Muslims and the next young generation by writing around ‎600 copies of Risale-i Nur‎ and spreading it all over Turkey to resist the ideology of Communism. Moreover, ‎he wrote 14 books properly and perfectly in one month. This was the reason that ‎Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi gave Imam Ahmed Husrev the title “The Legend of Risale-i Nur.” (The Staff of Moses: 2018:80)And further he says: “Almighty Allah has given a Risale-i Nur legend to this people as a blessing and he is Ahmed Husrev. I hid and didn’t show Husrev to people of the world (because they would harm him.)” (Kurt: 2008:43)

Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi respected Imam Husrev for his priceless attitude, truthfulness and diligence. Meanwhile, ‎Imam Ahmed Husrev honoured Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi and paved the way for him.‎ When Imam Ahmed Husrev mentioned that he was ready to sacrifice anything for Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi, he said this is not the time to write new books but to rewrite and spread the existing Risalas. Furthermore, he said that your writing is unique, impressive and also it is better than mine and it is in need of spreading the Risalas. Thus, Imam Nursi said, it would be my pleasure to spend a part of my life or health in your way. (Ereşen: 2014:259) According to Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi as Risale-i Nur is a spiritual miracle of Quran, Husrev’s writing has also been a great keramet of Risale-i Nur. (Ereşen: 2014:256)

Because of the service done by Imam Ahmed Husrev to Risale-i Nur, Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi has prohibited others from criticizing or standing against Imam Ahmed Husrev. The following words have been the proof for it: “The enemies behind us have two secret plans. The first one is to refute me through treason and defamation, the second is to divide us by spreading falsehood especially about Husrev. I would like to declare that, ‎even if Husrev has come with number of shortcomings (even more than thousands) I would fear to be against him. Because if we stand against him, it is like standing against me and Risale-i Nur and it is a betrayal. This would help the people who are trying to defame us.” (Şua’lar:2013:546)

After short period from the release of Afyon Prison Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi planned to award a diploma which was famous among the students called as “Ijazet” (certificates) to the stable and truthful students of Risale-i Nur. Then after, Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi sent Ijazets to Imam Ahmed Husrev and the students who were the pillars of Risale-i Nur’s preaching: “To Husrev the legend of Nur, dear precious and truthful brothers! With congratulating Eid,… Now here I declare the following: You all have given me mastery according to your good presumption about me in knowledge of Iman and Quranic service. Also, I am giving Ijazet especially to Husrev and the other pillars of the movement to each and every one according to their ranks, as the teachers who gave Ijazet to the students who were eligible to get the Ijazet in knowledge. I congratulate everyone from the bottom of my heart with full satisfaction. You all are unexceptionally preached Risale-i Nur with confidence, sincerity and faithfulness continuing with much better preaching than before instead of this incapable, weak and retired Sa’id. You all must be mighty capable, powerful and hard-working Sa’ids. Your brother Sa’id Nursi.” (Committee:2014:1087) Also Imam Bediüzzaman  Nursi’s close students highly respected Imam Ahmed Husrev because of his being the chief assistant to Imam Bediüzzaman  Nursi for a long time with sincerity and loyalty. Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi selected him to the main position of the Jama’at physically and to lead the Quranic service after his death.  The witnesses for this are Yakub Jemal, Ahmed Nazif Chelebi whom are from the front liners (Saf-ul’Evvel) of Risale-i Nur.

Imam Ahmed Husrev and Tewafuq Al-Qur’an

What is ‘Tewafuq’?

What does ‘tawafuq’ mean? What is the meaning of “the miracle of tawafuq in the Holy Qur’an”?

Tawafuq means “things being in a pleasant coherence, correspondence, and conformity with one another.” Especially the incidences that are beyond chance and behind which it is felt that a Divine intention and will exists are called tawafuq.

The miracle of tawafuq in the Holy Qur’an is the ‘congruent alignment’ of 2806 words of “Allah” in the Qur’an with very few exceptions. The word “Allah” is repeatedly mentioned in almost 604 pages of the Qur’an. These words are aligned with one another either under one another on the same page, or face to face on opposite pages, or back-to-back on two pages of a leaf, or overlapping interpages. The words “Rabb”, “Qur’an” and “Rasul” have the same tawafuq type. There are other kinds of tawafuq in the Qur’an too.

This miracle in the writing of the Qur’an was first recognised by Bediuzzaman Said Nursi in the last century. It is a wondrous miracle of the Qur’an pertaining to eyes in this age when people have been deeply influenced by the materialist irreligious philosophy and become an empirically-minded who says “we don’t believe in what we cannot see”. It is rather meaningful and completely a grace of Allah (swt).

There is also wisdom in the fact that such a miracle appeared 1350 years later after the first revelation of the Qur’an. And it is impossible to deny. It is as follows: If this miracle had appeared in the first copy of the Qur’an, the polytheists and the non-Muslims in the following centuries would say “Muhammad [pbuh] and his companions worked on it and made it happen.” After all this time and at such an age when people have started to say “we don’t believe what we cannot see”, the discovery of this miracle is a thing that will refute any objection.

Imam Bediuzzaman said the following about the subject: “A new copy of the Qur’an was written which will show one of the five or six miraculous aspects of The Qur’an of Miraculous Exposition pertaining to eyes. We preserved the pages and lined numbers of the copy written by Hafiz Uthman. We understood that although the word “Allah” is repeated in the Qur’an just 2806 times, they are all in tawafuq (congruent alignment) with some exceptions which are very few and have subtle meanings. We did not change pages or lines. We have just organized them. Then a marvellous tawafuq has appeared thereafter. We learned that some people of heart have seen our copy and accepted that it is similar to the script of the Preserved Tablet.” (See The Letters, The Index of The Letters and Rumuzat al-Thamaniya”

Writing process of the Qur’an in Tawafuq

How did the copies of the Qur’an that show the miracle of tawafuq come to exist?

This started when the page order called “Ayat Barkanar” in the Holy Qur’an was discovered. This page order is accepted by the entire Islamic world – which has today’s aspect ratio of “15-line-pages” and “604 pages in total”, was first applied by the well-known last period Ottoman calligrapher Kayışzade Hafiz Osman Efendi (d.1895).

This person handwrote a new copy of the Qur’an by taking its measure from the Qur’an itself, thus opening a door to a miracle of the Qur’an pertaining to eyes. This miracle is that every page of the Qur’an always starts and ends with a complete verse.

This feature is called “Ayat Barkanar”. It didn’t exist in the copies written until that day. The measure which Hafiz Osman Efendi took from the Holy Qur’an is as follows: 282nd verse of Surah Baqarah, the longest verse of the Qur’an, as the page measure; and the shortest surah, Surah Ikhlas, as the line measure. When he wrote the entire Qur’an with this measure, he saw that every page started and ended with a complete verse. This composition, which Imam Said Nursi described as “Divine inspiration and the Quran’s own measure”, gained great popularity in the Islamic world and the copies mostly started to be written based on this measure.

After so many centuries the appearance of such a beauty in the Qur’an, which was revealed 1400 years ago, is evidence for that the tawafuq is not a product of human work, in the contrary, this copy was written with inspiration from the almighty Allah and that the real page order of the Holy Qur’an in the Preserved Tablet was bestowed. This is because the revelation order of the verses is various; they have different lengths. So, the fact that every page ends with a complete verse can be explained neither with coincidence nor with human will.

The second phase of this miracle was seen almost 40 years after Hafiz Osman’s death, in 1930s, when the mujaddid of the age Imam Bediuzzaman realized the partly tawafuq of the words “Allah” in his copy of Qur’an written by Hafiz Osman. Upon this, examining all the pages and the words “Allah” in the pages Imam Bediuzzaman saw that a good part of them were in tawafuq; and some of them seemed to be not in tawafuq although they were meant to be in.

He decided to have a new copy of the Qur’an handwritten in a style that would show the eyes this tawafuq miracle which was understood that it existed in the composition of the word “Allah” in the Qur’an. He appointed ten of his students and gave each of them three parts (juz’) from the Holy Qur’an to handwrite and reveal the tawafuq. He asked them not to let their wills interfere while writing. He had also asked these tawafuqs to be written in red to be seen clearly. After a short time, the tawafuq was seen in the juzus that Ahmed Husrev Efendi wrote, whom Imam Nursi called the hero of the Risale-i Nur and one of his students whom he valued the most. Tawafuq did not appear in the juzus of other students. Imam Bediuzzaman declared the success of Hüsrev Efendi by saying “Tawafuq is in Husrev’s style.” (Barla Appendix)

After Husrev Efendi was mentioned by Imam Bediuzzaman’s as, the calligrapher of the miraculous copy of the Qur’an. He completed all the juzus in the shortest time and presented them to Imam Bediuzzaman. Imam congratulated Husrev Efendi in one of his letters to him and gave glad tidings of great rewards: “Oh, Husrev! Think of the supplications of the people of Islam, asking Allah to shower His Mercy and Compassion upon your spirit once the miraculous “the Holy Qur’an in Tawafuq” you wrote becomes published by the will of Allah. Think and thank Allah in gratitude!” (Kastamonu Letters)

In the following 40 years Husrev Efendi wrote the Qur’an in Tawafuq nine times and gave its final form. Today the Qur’an in Tawafuq is printed and presented to the benefit of Muslims by Hayrat Publication of Hayrat Foundation, founded by Husrev Efendi.

Through the arguments which we have mentioned above, we can say that Imam Ahmed Husrev has been assigned by Allah (swt) to serve Imam Bediüzzaman Said Nursi. Imam Ahmed Husrev vastly served and contributed to spread Risale-i Nur among the people. Because of this Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi and the frontlines of Risale-i Nur highly respected and loved him. So, criticizing Imam Ahmed Husrev openly means criticizing Risale-i Nur and Imam Bediüzzaman Nursi.
